Challenge: Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) had the largest OSIsoft PI SCADA database in the world. In order to get relevant snapshots of real-time operations information reflected ultimately in the corporate enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, PDVSA needed to move real-time data into an Oracle database. The existing Oracle database was designed as a staging and aggregation area, before passing it on to the ERP. Accessing the PI system's data was laborious and difficult, having to first access downloads, then text files or spreadsheets and lastly merge data into the Oracle staging database. The existing integration tools that could access the PI system's data were unable to handle PDVSA's very large database.
Stone Bond’s Solution: Stone Bond's Enterprise Enabler (EE) was able to automatically access the data through its AppComm technology. EE's drag-and-drop front end allowed rapid mapping to the Oracle data schema, with aggregation, tag-name mappings, application of validation and conditional logic based on data already in the Oracle database.
Benefits: In a matter of days, PDVSA streamlined and automated what had been a time-consuming and error-prone manual integration process. A future plan was established to ultimately eliminate the Oracle staging database, passing data directly to the ERP. PDVSA anticipates significant savings on resources conserved to maintain the database.
